My old Juicebox charger gave out (and they are out of business). First, the response was fast! Carlos B (5 stars to him) carefully reviewed the charger setup, electrical panel, subpanel, and also checked some outlets in the house. They recommended a Grizzl-e, which I ordered. Once it arrived, I was able to get an install appointment within a few days. Then Damell K (5 stars to him!!) installed -- and discovered improper original installation and fixed it! Yes! 10 stars!!

SOLAR PROJECT HEROES We are trying to get Sunrun solar but we have to update our electric before Sunrun can proceed. We had Eric and Carlos come to our home today. They were one of 6 electricians that we had come look at our particular complex, 3 panel update. We knew is was a big job, and almost cancelled the appointment because everyone previous to them could not provide a written estimate, or could not properly identify the complete scope of the work. Eric pulled out a phone that had an application that allowed him to plug in all the parts and labor and we had an estimate for the work within 5 minutes. He then informed us that this estimate is their commitment to an accurate assessment, and should anything pop up along the way, they would take responsibility for that cost. The other piece to this project was that PG&E would need to be involved in approval and permitting. He said they handle all communication with PG&E and that the cost for permits was part of the estimate. This sweetened the deal because the estimate also came with zero interest financing. You can imagine the relief. Eric and Carlos were able to verbally paint a picture for us that they could handle the scope of the project from start to finish, with a dollar amount that wasn't going to get pushed, and the option for zero interest financing. We signed the contract on the spot. The contract gives us three days to pull out should our other parties decide they don't want to move forward. Conclusion, if you are trying to get solar before the end of the rebates and updating your system is required, Five or Free is fully prepared to make that project possible.

Review
I was impressed by the scheduling logistics from Five or Free and how quickly they were able to organize a visit to my place to provide a quote for an EV charger installation. Carlos was the engineer assigned to the job and went above and beyond explaining to me the options and talking about the electrical setup in my home. In the end the quote was high and I decided not to have the work done but the overall experiences was so good I wanted to leave and review and recommend.

Frequently Asked Questions About Electrician Services in the SF Bay Area & Sacramento

1. How much does it cost to upgrade an electrical panel in the SF Bay Area or Sacramento?

Electrical panel upgrades in the SF Bay Area and Sacramento typically range from $1,500 to $3,500 depending on the amp rating (most homes upgrade to 200-amp service) and whether additional work like rewiring is needed. Many older homes throughout Northern California have 100-amp or even 60-amp panels that can’t handle modern electrical demands. At Five or Free Electrical Heating & Air, our electricians provide free estimates and can walk you through what your home needs.

2. Why does my circuit breaker keep tripping?

A circuit breaker that keeps tripping is protecting your home from an overload, short circuit, or ground fault. Common causes include too many devices on one circuit, a faulty appliance, or damaged wiring. If it happens repeatedly, don’t just keep resetting it—call an electrician to diagnose the problem before it becomes a fire hazard.

3. Can I install my own electrical outlet, or do I need an electrician?

While it’s technically possible for a handy homeowner to install an outlet, electrical work in California requires permits and inspections for safety and code compliance. More importantly, incorrect wiring can cause shocks, fires, or damage to your home’s electrical system. Our licensed electricians at Five or Free handle it safely and make sure everything is up to code throughout the Bay Area and Sacramento.

4. How do I know if my home needs rewiring?

Signs your home needs rewiring include: frequent breaker trips, flickering lights, outlets that don’t work or feel warm, a burning smell near outlets or switches, or outdated wiring like knob-and-tube or aluminum wiring. If your home is over 40 years old and hasn’t been updated, it’s worth having an electrician inspect your wiring. We offer comprehensive electrical inspections throughout Northern California to give you peace of mind.

5. What’s the difference between 100-amp and 200-amp electrical service?

A 100-amp panel can handle basic household needs but struggles with modern demands like central AC, electric vehicle chargers, and multiple high-power appliances. A 200-amp panel provides enough capacity for today’s homes and future upgrades. Most electricians in the Bay Area and Sacramento recommend 200-amp service for any panel upgrade or new construction.

6. Do I need a permit for electrical work in the SF Bay Area or Sacramento?

Yes. Most electrical work throughout the Bay Area and Sacramento requires permits from your local city or county, including panel upgrades, new circuits, rewiring, and installing EV chargers. Licensed electricians pull permits as part of the job and ensure inspections are completed. At Five or Free, we handle all permits and inspections so you don’t have to worry about it. Unpermitted electrical work can cause problems when selling your home and may not be covered by insurance if something goes wrong.

7. How long does an electrical panel upgrade take?

Most electrical panel upgrades take 4-8 hours to complete, though larger jobs or homes requiring additional work may take a full day or two. Our electricians at Five or Free work efficiently to minimize disruption, and we’ll coordinate with PG&E or your local utility if a temporary power shutoff is needed during the upgrade.

Frequently Asked Questions About Heating and Air Conditioning Services in the SF Bay Area & Sacramento

1. How often should I service my air conditioner in the SF Bay Area or Sacramento?

You should have your AC serviced at least once a year, ideally in spring before the heat arrives. Sacramento summers regularly hit 100-105 degrees, while Bay Area inland areas like Livermore and San Jose can reach the 90s and beyond. Regular maintenance catches small problems before they become expensive breakdowns. Our heating and air conditioning technicians at Five or Free check refrigerant levels, clean coils, test components, and make sure your system is ready for summer heat.

2. Why is my AC running but not cooling my home?

Common causes include low refrigerant (often from a leak), a dirty air filter, frozen evaporator coils, a failing compressor, or blocked airflow from dirty ducts. In Bay Area coastal areas, salt air can also corrode components over time. Our heating and air conditioning team can diagnose the issue and get your AC blowing cold air again quickly.

3. How long do AC units last in the SF Bay Area or Sacramento?

Most air conditioning systems last 12-15 years with regular maintenance. Sacramento’s extreme valley heat and Bay Area coastal salt air can both stress systems over time. If your AC is over 10 years old and struggling to keep up or needing frequent repairs, it’s worth considering replacement with a more efficient model. We help homeowners throughout Northern California evaluate whether repair or replacement makes the most sense.

4. What size AC unit do I need for my Bay Area or Sacramento home?

AC sizing depends on your home’s square footage, insulation, ceiling height, number of windows, and sun exposure. Climate matters too—Sacramento’s 105-degree summers require different sizing considerations than San Francisco’s milder temps. An oversized unit cycles on and off too frequently, while an undersized unit runs constantly and can’t keep up. Our heating and air conditioning technicians at Five or Free perform proper load calculations to recommend the right size for your specific location and home.

5. Why is my furnace blowing cold air?

If your furnace is running but blowing cold air, the most common causes are a faulty pilot light or ignition system, a tripped circuit breaker, a dirty flame sensor, or the thermostat set to “fan” instead of “auto.” Sometimes it’s a simple fix, but our heating and air conditioning team throughout the Bay Area and Sacramento can diagnose and repair any furnace issue quickly.

6. How much does it cost to replace an HVAC system in the SF Bay Area or Sacramento?

HVAC system replacement in the Bay Area and Sacramento typically ranges from $5,000 to $12,000+ depending on the system size, efficiency rating (SEER), brand, and installation complexity. Higher efficiency systems cost more upfront but save significantly on energy bills, especially in Sacramento’s hot summers. Our heating and air conditioning technicians at Five or Free provide detailed estimates and financing options to fit your budget.

7. Should I repair or replace my old AC unit?

A good rule of thumb: if the repair cost is more than half the price of a new unit, or if your AC is over 12 years old and needs major repairs, replacement usually makes more sense. Newer systems are 30-50% more efficient than models from 10+ years ago, which can mean substantial savings in areas with extreme heat like Sacramento. Our heating and air conditioning experts at Five or Free help you compare options and make the best decision for your budget and home.
