My old Juicebox charger gave out (and they are out of business). First, the response was fast! Carlos B (5 stars to him) carefully reviewed the charger setup, electrical panel, subpanel, and also checked some outlets in the house. They recommended a Grizzl-e, which I ordered. Once it arrived, I was able to get an install appointment within a few days. Then Damell K (5 stars to him!!) installed -- and discovered improper original installation and fixed it! Yes! 10 stars!!

SOLAR PROJECT HEROES We are trying to get Sunrun solar but we have to update our electric before Sunrun can proceed. We had Eric and Carlos come to our home today. They were one of 6 electricians that we had come look at our particular complex, 3 panel update. We knew is was a big job, and almost cancelled the appointment because everyone previous to them could not provide a written estimate, or could not properly identify the complete scope of the work. Eric pulled out a phone that had an application that allowed him to plug in all the parts and labor and we had an estimate for the work within 5 minutes. He then informed us that this estimate is their commitment to an accurate assessment, and should anything pop up along the way, they would take responsibility for that cost. The other piece to this project was that PG&E would need to be involved in approval and permitting. He said they handle all communication with PG&E and that the cost for permits was part of the estimate. This sweetened the deal because the estimate also came with zero interest financing. You can imagine the relief. Eric and Carlos were able to verbally paint a picture for us that they could handle the scope of the project from start to finish, with a dollar amount that wasn't going to get pushed, and the option for zero interest financing. We signed the contract on the spot. The contract gives us three days to pull out should our other parties decide they don't want to move forward. Conclusion, if you are trying to get solar before the end of the rebates and updating your system is required, Five or Free is fully prepared to make that project possible.

Frequently Asked Questions About Heating and Air Conditioning | Electrician Services in San Leandro

Got questions about HVAC or electrical work? You’re not alone. Here are the answers San Leandro homeowners search for most.

Electrician Questions

Why does my circuit breaker keep tripping?

This is one of the most common calls we get at Five or Free Electrical Heating & Air. A tripping breaker usually means the circuit is overloaded, there’s a short circuit, or you have a ground fault somewhere in the wiring. Many San Leandro homes—especially those built between 1940 and 1960—have electrical systems that weren’t designed for today’s power demands. If resetting the breaker doesn’t solve it, call a licensed electrician before it becomes a fire hazard.

How do I know if my electrical panel needs an upgrade?

If your San Leandro home still uses fuses instead of breakers, has a 60-amp or 100-amp panel, or you notice flickering lights, burning smells, or breakers that won’t stay reset—it’s time for an evaluation. Many homeowners find their existing panels can’t keep up with air conditioning, modern appliances, home office equipment, and EV chargers. At Five or Free, we upgrade panels to 200-amp service regularly—it improves safety, prevents outages, and prepares your home for future needs.

What is a GFCI outlet and where do I need them?

GFCI stands for Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter. These outlets protect you from electrical shock in areas where water is present—bathrooms, kitchens, garages, outdoor spaces, and laundry rooms. You can identify them by the “test” and “reset” buttons on the face. Many older San Leandro homes lack GFCI protection in these areas. Our team at Five or Free can install them to bring your home up to current safety standards.

Why are my lights flickering throughout my house?

Flickering lights can signal several issues—loose wiring, voltage fluctuations, an overloaded circuit, or problems with your electrical panel. Occasional flickers during a storm are normal, but consistent flickering is a warning sign. Loose connections can overheat and cause fires. Have a licensed electrician inspect your system to find the root cause.

Can you install an electric vehicle charger at my San Leandro home?

Yes. Five or Free Electrical Heating & Air installs Level 2 EV charging stations throughout San Leandro. This requires running a dedicated 240-volt circuit from your electrical panel to your garage or driveway. Many older San Leandro homes need panel upgrades to accommodate EV chargers alongside existing electrical loads. We handle all permits and make sure everything meets code.

Is it safe to use extension cords for refrigerators or other major appliances?

No. Extension cords are not designed for the continuous power draw of major appliances like refrigerators, freezers, or space heaters. They can overheat, cause voltage drops, and create serious fire hazards. If your San Leandro home doesn’t have an outlet where you need one, we can install a dedicated, properly grounded outlet in the right location.

How do I know if my San Leandro home needs rewiring?

Signs your home may need rewiring include frequently tripping breakers, discolored or warm outlets, burning smells, two-prong outlets throughout the house, or cloth-wrapped wiring visible in the attic or basement. If your San Leandro home is over 50 years old and hasn’t been updated, Five or Free offers electrical inspections to assess your wiring condition and recommend next steps.

Heating and Air Conditioning Questions

How often should I change my air filter?

For most San Leandro homes, we recommend checking your filter monthly and replacing it every 30 to 90 days. During warmer months when your AC runs more frequently, you may need to change it more often. If you have pets or allergies, change it closer to every 30 days. A clogged filter restricts airflow, makes your system work harder, increases energy bills, and shortens equipment life.

Why is my AC running but not cooling my San Leandro home?

Several issues could cause this—low refrigerant, a dirty condenser coil, frozen evaporator coils, a failing compressor, or leaky ductwork. When temperatures climb into the mid-70s and higher during late summer, your AC works to keep up. If your system is blowing warm air or can’t maintain comfortable temperatures, call Five or Free for a diagnosis before a small problem turns into a major repair.

How long do HVAC systems typically last?

Most air conditioners and furnaces last 15 to 20 years with proper maintenance. San Leandro’s mild, Bay-influenced climate is easier on equipment than extreme environments, which can help extend system life. However, age still takes its toll. If your system is over 10 to 15 years old and needing frequent repairs, it may be more cost-effective to replace it with a newer, energy-efficient model. Our team at Five or Free can help you weigh repair versus replacement options.

Should I repair or replace my HVAC system?

A common rule in the industry is the “$5,000 rule”—multiply the age of your system by the cost of the repair. If the total exceeds $5,000, replacement usually makes more sense. Other factors include how often it’s breaking down, rising energy bills, and whether your San Leandro home stays comfortable. At Five or Free, we give honest assessments—we won’t push a replacement if a repair makes more sense for your situation.

What temperature should I set my thermostat to save energy?

San Leandro’s mild climate means you won’t need extreme settings. During warmer months, setting your thermostat to 72-76 degrees when you’re home works well. In winter, 65-68 degrees is comfortable for most households. We also install programmable and smart thermostats that adjust automatically based on your schedule—a great way to save energy when you’re at work or away.

Why is my furnace making strange noises?

Different noises mean different problems. Banging or popping often indicates ductwork expanding and contracting. Squealing can signal a worn blower belt or motor issue. Rattling may mean loose components. And a grinding noise usually points to a serious motor problem. Don’t ignore unusual sounds—they typically get worse and more expensive to fix. Call Five or Free to have it inspected before you’re left without heat on a cool, foggy San Leandro morning.

How often should I have my HVAC system serviced?

We recommend twice a year—once in spring before warmer weather and once in fall before heating season. Regular maintenance keeps your system running efficiently, catches small problems before they become big repairs, and extends equipment life. Five or Free’s tune-ups include inspecting all components, cleaning coils, checking refrigerant, and testing system performance.
