My old Juicebox charger gave out (and they are out of business). First, the response was fast! Carlos B (5 stars to him) carefully reviewed the charger setup, electrical panel, subpanel, and also checked some outlets in the house. They recommended a Grizzl-e, which I ordered. Once it arrived, I was able to get an install appointment within a few days. Then Damell K (5 stars to him!!) installed -- and discovered improper original installation and fixed it! Yes! 10 stars!!

SOLAR PROJECT HEROES We are trying to get Sunrun solar but we have to update our electric before Sunrun can proceed. We had Eric and Carlos come to our home today. They were one of 6 electricians that we had come look at our particular complex, 3 panel update. We knew is was a big job, and almost cancelled the appointment because everyone previous to them could not provide a written estimate, or could not properly identify the complete scope of the work. Eric pulled out a phone that had an application that allowed him to plug in all the parts and labor and we had an estimate for the work within 5 minutes. He then informed us that this estimate is their commitment to an accurate assessment, and should anything pop up along the way, they would take responsibility for that cost. The other piece to this project was that PG&E would need to be involved in approval and permitting. He said they handle all communication with PG&E and that the cost for permits was part of the estimate. This sweetened the deal because the estimate also came with zero interest financing. You can imagine the relief. Eric and Carlos were able to verbally paint a picture for us that they could handle the scope of the project from start to finish, with a dollar amount that wasn't going to get pushed, and the option for zero interest financing. We signed the contract on the spot. The contract gives us three days to pull out should our other parties decide they don't want to move forward. Conclusion, if you are trying to get solar before the end of the rebates and updating your system is required, Five or Free is fully prepared to make that project possible.

From Hidden Oaks to Eagle Ridge, from the homes along Blackhawk Road to the estates overlooking the golf courses, we’ve built our reputation on reliable service and exceptional workmanship.

Got questions about HVAC or electrical work? You’re not alone. Here are the answers Blackhawk homeowners search for most when looking for a heating and air conditioning electrician.

Electrician Questions

Why does my circuit breaker keep tripping?

This is one of the most common calls we get at Five or Free Electrical Heating & Air. A tripping breaker usually means the circuit is overloaded, there’s a short circuit, or you have a ground fault somewhere in the wiring. In Blackhawk’s larger homes, this often happens when pool equipment, HVAC systems, and household appliances all draw power simultaneously. If resetting the breaker doesn’t solve it, call a licensed heating and air conditioning electrician before it becomes a fire hazard.

How do I know if my electrical panel needs an upgrade?

Signs your panel needs upgrading include frequent tripping breakers, no room for additional circuits, plans to add major equipment like EV chargers or pool heaters, or a panel rated below 200 amps. Many Blackhawk homes—even those built in the 1990s and 2000s—have panels that weren’t designed for today’s electrical demands. Between multi-zone HVAC, pool and spa equipment, EV chargers, and home automation, today’s luxury homes need substantial electrical capacity. Our heating and air conditioning electrician team frequently upgrades panels to 200-amp, 320-amp, or even 400-amp service for larger estates.

What electrical capacity do I need for a large home?

It depends on your home’s size and systems. A typical 3,000-square-foot home might work well with 200-amp service. Homes exceeding 5,000 square feet with pools, multiple HVAC zones, and extensive amenities often need 320-amp or 400-amp service. If you’re planning additions like EV chargers (which can require 50+ amps each), your heating and air conditioning electrician should perform a load calculation to ensure adequate capacity.

Can you install an electric vehicle charger at my Blackhawk home?

Yes. Five or Free Electrical Heating & Air installs Level 2 and high-power EV charging stations throughout Blackhawk. This requires running a dedicated 240-volt circuit from your electrical panel to your garage or motor court. Depending on your vehicles and charging needs, you may want multiple chargers or higher-amperage units for faster charging. Our heating and air conditioning electrician team handles all permits and ensures everything meets code.

Do you handle pool and spa electrical work?

Absolutely. Pool pumps, heaters, lighting, automation systems, and water features all require specialized electrical work. We install, repair, and upgrade pool and spa electrical systems throughout Blackhawk. All pool electrical work requires proper bonding and grounding for safety, and our heating and air conditioning electrician team ensures everything meets current code requirements.

Can you install landscape and outdoor lighting?

Yes. As your lighting consultant and lighting contractor, we design and install landscape lighting, pathway lighting, architectural accent lighting, and outdoor entertaining area illumination. Blackhawk’s beautiful properties deserve lighting that enhances their architectural features and landscaping. Our heating and air conditioning electrician team creates systems that are both beautiful and functional.

How do I know if my home needs rewiring?

Signs your home may need rewiring include frequently tripping breakers, discolored or warm outlets, burning smells, or insufficient circuits for your needs. Even Blackhawk homes built in the 1980s may have wiring that doesn’t meet current standards or can’t support today’s electrical demands. A thorough inspection by a qualified heating and air conditioning electrician can identify problems and recommend solutions.

Why are some rooms in my Blackhawk home too hot or too cold?

Uneven temperatures in larger homes typically indicate zoning issues, undersized equipment, ductwork problems, or inadequate returns. Many original HVAC systems weren’t designed with proper zoning—they treat the entire home as one space, which doesn’t work well for multi-story homes or properties with varied sun exposure. Our heating and air conditioning electrician team can evaluate your system and recommend solutions, whether that’s adding zones, correcting ductwork issues, or upgrading to properly sized equipment.

How often should I change my air filter?

For most Blackhawk homes, we recommend checking filters monthly and replacing them every 30 to 90 days. However, larger homes often have multiple air handlers, each with its own filter. If you have pets, allergies, or extensive outdoor areas that bring in dust and pollen, change filters more frequently. Your heating and air conditioning electrician can recommend the right filter schedule for your specific system.

How long do HVAC systems typically last?

Most air conditioners and furnaces last 15 to 20 years with proper maintenance. However, system lifespan depends heavily on maintenance, quality of installation, and how hard the system works. Blackhawk’s Mediterranean climate is relatively moderate, which helps extend equipment life. If your system is over 10 to 15 years old and needing frequent repairs, consult with our heating and air conditioning electrician team about repair versus replacement options.

What size HVAC system does my Blackhawk home need?

Proper sizing requires a detailed load calculation that considers square footage, ceiling heights, window area and orientation, insulation levels, number of occupants, and more. For Blackhawk’s larger homes, this often means multiple systems or a single large system with proper zoning. An undersized system will run constantly without maintaining comfort; an oversized system will cycle frequently, wasting energy and failing to properly dehumidify. Our heating and air conditioning electrician team performs accurate load calculations to ensure proper sizing.

Should I consider a multi-zone HVAC system?

For most Blackhawk homes, absolutely. Zoning allows different areas of your home to maintain different temperatures based on use and sun exposure. Guest wings, master suites, home offices, and entertainment areas can all be conditioned independently. This improves comfort and reduces energy waste by not conditioning unused spaces. Our heating and air conditioning electrician team designs zoning systems tailored to how you actually use your home.

How often should I have my HVAC system serviced?

We recommend twice a year—once in spring before cooling season and once in fall before heating season. For larger homes with multiple systems, we schedule maintenance for all units during the same visit for convenience. Regular maintenance keeps systems running efficiently, catches small problems before they become expensive repairs, and extends equipment life. Five or Free’s heating and air conditioning electrician tune-ups include comprehensive inspection of all components, coil cleaning, refrigerant checks, and performance testing.

Can you help with wine cellar climate control?

Yes. Wine storage requires precise temperature and humidity control to protect your collection. We install dedicated climate control systems designed specifically for wine cellars, maintaining the ideal 55-58°F temperature and 60-70% humidity that fine wines require. Our heating and air conditioning electrician team can design systems for cellars of any size.
