My old Juicebox charger gave out (and they are out of business). First, the response was fast! Carlos B (5 stars to him) carefully reviewed the charger setup, electrical panel, subpanel, and also checked some outlets in the house. They recommended a Grizzl-e, which I ordered. Once it arrived, I was able to get an install appointment within a few days. Then Damell K (5 stars to him!!) installed -- and discovered improper original installation and fixed it! Yes! 10 stars!!

SOLAR PROJECT HEROES We are trying to get Sunrun solar but we have to update our electric before Sunrun can proceed. We had Eric and Carlos come to our home today. They were one of 6 electricians that we had come look at our particular complex, 3 panel update. We knew is was a big job, and almost cancelled the appointment because everyone previous to them could not provide a written estimate, or could not properly identify the complete scope of the work. Eric pulled out a phone that had an application that allowed him to plug in all the parts and labor and we had an estimate for the work within 5 minutes. He then informed us that this estimate is their commitment to an accurate assessment, and should anything pop up along the way, they would take responsibility for that cost. The other piece to this project was that PG&E would need to be involved in approval and permitting. He said they handle all communication with PG&E and that the cost for permits was part of the estimate. This sweetened the deal because the estimate also came with zero interest financing. You can imagine the relief. Eric and Carlos were able to verbally paint a picture for us that they could handle the scope of the project from start to finish, with a dollar amount that wasn't going to get pushed, and the option for zero interest financing. We signed the contract on the spot. The contract gives us three days to pull out should our other parties decide they don't want to move forward. Conclusion, if you are trying to get solar before the end of the rebates and updating your system is required, Five or Free is fully prepared to make that project possible.

Got questions about HVAC or electrical work? You’re not alone. Here are the answers Clayton homeowners search for most when looking for a heating and air conditioning electrician.

Electrician Questions

Why does my circuit breaker keep tripping?

This is one of the most common calls we get at Five or Free Electrical Heating & Air. A tripping breaker usually means the circuit is overloaded, there’s a short circuit, or you have a ground fault somewhere in the wiring. Many Clayton homes—built in the 1970s through 1990s—have electrical systems that can struggle with modern demands like air conditioning, home offices, and multiple electronic devices. If resetting the breaker doesn’t solve it, call a licensed heating and air conditioning electrician before it becomes a fire hazard.

How do I know if my electrical panel needs an upgrade?

Signs your panel needs upgrading include frequent tripping breakers, panel rated at 100 amps or less, no room for additional circuits, or plans to add major equipment like EV chargers or hot tubs. Many Clayton homes have 100-amp or 150-amp panels that weren’t designed for today’s electrical demands. At Five or Free, we upgrade panels to 200-amp service regularly—it improves safety, prevents outages, and prepares your home for future needs. Panel upgrades are one of the most important services a heating and air conditioning electrician can provide.

What is a GFCI outlet and where do I need them?

GFCI stands for Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter. These outlets protect you from electrical shock in areas where water is present—bathrooms, kitchens, garages, outdoor spaces, and laundry rooms. You can identify them by the “test” and “reset” buttons on the face. If your Clayton home doesn’t have GFCI outlets in these areas, our heating and air conditioning electrician team can install them to bring your home up to current safety standards.

Why are my lights flickering throughout my house?

Flickering lights can signal several issues—loose wiring, voltage fluctuations, an overloaded circuit, or problems with your electrical panel. Occasional flickers during a storm are normal, but consistent flickering is a warning sign that requires evaluation by a heating and air conditioning electrician. Loose connections can overheat and cause fires—don’t ignore this symptom.

Can you install an electric vehicle charger at my Clayton home?

Yes. Five or Free Electrical Heating & Air installs Level 2 EV charging stations throughout Clayton. This requires running a dedicated 240-volt circuit from your electrical panel to your garage or driveway. Many Clayton homes may need panel evaluations to ensure adequate capacity for EV chargers alongside air conditioning and other electrical loads. Our heating and air conditioning electrician team handles all permits and makes sure everything meets code.

Is it safe to use extension cords for refrigerators or other major appliances?

No. Extension cords are not designed for the continuous power draw of major appliances like refrigerators, freezers, or space heaters. They can overheat, cause voltage drops, and create serious fire hazards. If your Clayton home doesn’t have an outlet where you need one, our heating and air conditioning electrician team can install a dedicated, properly grounded outlet in the right location.

How do I know if my Clayton home needs rewiring?

Signs your home may need rewiring include frequently tripping breakers, discolored or warm outlets, burning smells, or insufficient circuits for your needs. Homes built in the 1970s and 1980s may have wiring that doesn’t meet current standards or can’t support today’s electrical demands. A thorough inspection by a qualified heating and air conditioning electrician can identify problems and recommend solutions.

How often should I change my air filter?

For most Clayton homes, we recommend checking your filter monthly and replacing it every 30 to 90 days. During summer months when your AC runs more frequently—especially during heat waves—you should change it closer to every 30 days. Fire season is another consideration in Clayton; a clean filter helps maintain indoor air quality when smoke is in the air. If you have pets or allergies, change it even more frequently. Your heating and air conditioning electrician can recommend the right filter schedule for your specific system.

Why is my AC running but not cooling my Clayton home?

Several issues could cause this—low refrigerant, a dirty condenser coil, frozen evaporator coils, a failing compressor, or leaky ductwork. When Clayton temperatures climb into the 80s and 90s during summer, your AC works hard to keep up. If your system is blowing warm air or can’t maintain comfortable temperatures, call a heating and air conditioning electrician for a diagnosis before a small problem turns into a major repair or complete system failure.

How long do HVAC systems typically last?

Most air conditioners and furnaces last 15 to 20 years with proper maintenance. Many Clayton homes now have systems that are 25 to 40 years old—well past their expected lifespan. If your system is over 15 years old and needing frequent repairs, consult with our heating and air conditioning electrician team about repair versus replacement options. Modern high-efficiency systems can significantly reduce your energy bills while providing better comfort.

Should I repair or replace my HVAC system?

A common rule in the industry is the “$5,000 rule”—multiply the age of your system by the cost of the repair. If the total exceeds $5,000, replacement usually makes more sense. Other factors include how often it’s breaking down, rising energy bills, and whether your Clayton home stays comfortable during hot days. At Five or Free, our heating and air conditioning electrician team gives honest assessments—we won’t push a replacement if a repair makes more sense for your situation.

What temperature should I set my thermostat to save energy?

During Clayton’s warm summers, setting your thermostat to 76-78 degrees when you’re home helps balance comfort and efficiency. Going much lower will make your system work harder and drive up energy bills. In winter, 65-68 degrees works well for most households. Our heating and air conditioning electrician team installs programmable and smart thermostats that adjust automatically based on your schedule—a great way to save energy when you’re at work or sleeping.

Why is my furnace making strange noises?

Different noises mean different problems. Banging or popping often indicates ductwork expanding and contracting. Squealing can signal a worn blower belt or motor issue. Rattling may mean loose components. And a grinding noise usually points to a serious motor problem. Don’t ignore unusual sounds—they typically get worse and more expensive to fix. Call your heating and air conditioning electrician at Five or Free to have it inspected before you’re left without heat on a cold Clayton morning.

How often should I have my HVAC system serviced?

We recommend twice a year—once in spring before the cooling season and once in fall before heating season. Regular maintenance keeps your system running efficiently, catches small problems before they become big repairs, and extends equipment life. Five or Free’s heating and air conditioning electrician tune-ups include comprehensive inspection of all components, coil cleaning, refrigerant checks, and performance testing.

What size HVAC system does my Clayton home need?

Proper sizing requires a detailed load calculation that considers square footage, ceiling heights, window area and orientation, insulation levels, and Clayton’s specific climate conditions. An undersized system will run constantly without maintaining comfort during hot days; an oversized system will cycle frequently, wasting energy and failing to properly condition your home. Our heating and air conditioning electrician team performs accurate load calculations to ensure proper sizing.
