My old Juicebox charger gave out (and they are out of business). First, the response was fast! Carlos B (5 stars to him) carefully reviewed the charger setup, electrical panel, subpanel, and also checked some outlets in the house. They recommended a Grizzl-e, which I ordered. Once it arrived, I was able to get an install appointment within a few days. Then Damell K (5 stars to him!!) installed -- and discovered improper original installation and fixed it! Yes! 10 stars!!

SOLAR PROJECT HEROES We are trying to get Sunrun solar but we have to update our electric before Sunrun can proceed. We had Eric and Carlos come to our home today. They were one of 6 electricians that we had come look at our particular complex, 3 panel update. We knew is was a big job, and almost cancelled the appointment because everyone previous to them could not provide a written estimate, or could not properly identify the complete scope of the work. Eric pulled out a phone that had an application that allowed him to plug in all the parts and labor and we had an estimate for the work within 5 minutes. He then informed us that this estimate is their commitment to an accurate assessment, and should anything pop up along the way, they would take responsibility for that cost. The other piece to this project was that PG&E would need to be involved in approval and permitting. He said they handle all communication with PG&E and that the cost for permits was part of the estimate. This sweetened the deal because the estimate also came with zero interest financing. You can imagine the relief. Eric and Carlos were able to verbally paint a picture for us that they could handle the scope of the project from start to finish, with a dollar amount that wasn't going to get pushed, and the option for zero interest financing. We signed the contract on the spot. The contract gives us three days to pull out should our other parties decide they don't want to move forward. Conclusion, if you are trying to get solar before the end of the rebates and updating your system is required, Five or Free is fully prepared to make that project possible.

Clayton grew during the coal mining boom in eastern Contra Costa County. The post office opened in 1861. But modern Clayton’s identity was forged on March 3, 1964, when 91 percent of the city’s 364 registered voters approved incorporation—a California voting record. Clayton residents wanted local control of planning and development. They worried about commercial strip zoning and development density encroaching from neighboring cities. When nearby Concord attempted to annex the Cardinet Glen neighborhood, Claytonians mobilized and successfully declared their independence, becoming Contra Costa County’s 13th city.

That fierce community spirit endures today. Clayton has carefully maintained its semi-rural ambience and small-town character while allowing thoughtful development. The city expanded significantly in 1987 with the annexation of Dana Hills, Dana Ridge, Clayton Wood, and the former Keller Ranch property, which became the Oakhurst Country Club development in the 1990s.

Clayton’s story is one of independence and community spirit. When Joel Henry Clayton won that famous coin flip against Charles Rhine in 1857, he didn’t just name a town—he planted the seeds of a community that would fiercely protect its identity for generations.

By 1964, that identity was under threat. Concord’s growth was pushing toward Clayton, and a “cherry stem” annexation attempt targeting the Cardinet Glen neighborhood appeared in an obscure paragraph of the Oakland Tribune. Alert resident Nan Wallace spotted it on March 3, 1963, and immediately rallied her neighbors. Within weeks, leading citizens including Randall “Chubby” Humble (owner of the Pioneer Inn), George Murchio, Judge Wroy Renaghan, and others had organized an incorporation effort.

The vote on March 3, 1964 was decisive. At 8:00 pm, poll inspector Sigrid Frank—a 69-year-old Clayton old-timer—stepped onto the porch of Endeavor Hall, rang a brass bell, and proclaimed “Hear Ye! Hear Ye! Hear Ye! The polls are closed.” As the votes were tallied, Ken Byrd and Richard Hamb climbed the hill above town and rang Clayton’s old school bell to announce the victory. Ninety-one percent had voted yes—a California record.

That spirit of community self-determination still defines Clayton today. The city has maintained its semi-rural character while thoughtfully accommodating growth.
