My old Juicebox charger gave out (and they are out of business). First, the response was fast! Carlos B (5 stars to him) carefully reviewed the charger setup, electrical panel, subpanel, and also checked some outlets in the house. They recommended a Grizzl-e, which I ordered. Once it arrived, I was able to get an install appointment within a few days. Then Damell K (5 stars to him!!) installed -- and discovered improper original installation and fixed it! Yes! 10 stars!!

SOLAR PROJECT HEROES We are trying to get Sunrun solar but we have to update our electric before Sunrun can proceed. We had Eric and Carlos come to our home today. They were one of 6 electricians that we had come look at our particular complex, 3 panel update. We knew is was a big job, and almost cancelled the appointment because everyone previous to them could not provide a written estimate, or could not properly identify the complete scope of the work. Eric pulled out a phone that had an application that allowed him to plug in all the parts and labor and we had an estimate for the work within 5 minutes. He then informed us that this estimate is their commitment to an accurate assessment, and should anything pop up along the way, they would take responsibility for that cost. The other piece to this project was that PG&E would need to be involved in approval and permitting. He said they handle all communication with PG&E and that the cost for permits was part of the estimate. This sweetened the deal because the estimate also came with zero interest financing. You can imagine the relief. Eric and Carlos were able to verbally paint a picture for us that they could handle the scope of the project from start to finish, with a dollar amount that wasn't going to get pushed, and the option for zero interest financing. We signed the contract on the spot. The contract gives us three days to pull out should our other parties decide they don't want to move forward. Conclusion, if you are trying to get solar before the end of the rebates and updating your system is required, Five or Free is fully prepared to make that project possible.

We had Five or Free electricians replacing an old subpanel and running some new circuits for our kitchen remodel. Everything is now up to current code 🙂 - an unexpected expense that we're glad we took care of quickly. The service technicians (Evan and Matt) showed up on time and spent a long day completing all the work professionally. They cleaned up every work area and patched the walls nicely. We'll be calling back for our next remodeling project I'm sure.

Tim came on time and quickly diagnosed our problem- Our microwave was overloading the circuit. He reconnected the wires on our subpanel to put the microwave on an independent line. He also upgraded two of our outlets which had the older model stab inserts for the wires. Tim was professional and courteous and addressed our needs. Great job!

Your Local Heating and Air Conditioning | Electrician, Lighting Contractor & Air Conditioning Contractor Serving Lafayette

Lafayette is a city of about 25,400 residents nestled among oak-studded hills in the heart of Lamorinda. Named after the Marquis de Lafayette—the French military hero of the American Revolutionary War—this community traces its American settlement to 1848 when Elam Brown purchased Rancho Acalanes. For a century, Lafayette remained a quiet farming village. Then came the post-World War II suburban boom, transforming it into the thriving residential community that incorporated in 1968. With its motto “Green Hills, Great Schools,” Lafayette offers a semi-rural ambiance, top-rated schools, and a BART ride to San Francisco.

Q&A SECTION: ELECTRICIAN

Frequently Asked Questions: Electrician Services in Lafayette

Why does my circuit breaker keep tripping?

This is one of the most common calls we get as a heating and air conditioning electrician company serving Lafayette. Circuit breakers trip when they detect an overload (too much current draw), a short circuit (hot wire contacting neutral), or a ground fault (current escaping to ground). In Lafayette homes—especially those built in the 1950s and 1960s—repeated tripping typically means your circuits are overloaded because they’re running far more devices than they were designed for. A single 15-amp circuit that originally powered a few lights and a radio now may be asked to handle a TV, computer, multiple chargers, and a space heater. This is especially common when older homes add air conditioning—the additional electrical load pushes already-strained systems over the edge. Our heating and air conditioning electrician technicians can diagnose the cause and recommend solutions, whether that’s redistributing loads across circuits, adding new dedicated circuits, or upgrading your panel to handle modern electrical demands.

How do I know if my Lafayette home needs an electrical panel upgrade?

Several warning signs indicate your panel may need upgrading: breakers trip frequently (especially when running the AC or multiple appliances), lights flicker or dim when large appliances cycle on, you rely on power strips and extension cords because you don’t have enough outlets, your panel uses fuses instead of breakers, your panel is rated at 60 or 100 amps (check the main breaker), your panel is a brand known for safety issues (Federal Pacific, Zinsco, or Pushmatic), you’re planning to add an EV charger, hot tub, or other major electrical load, or your home simply has more electrical demands than it did when built. The median Lafayette home was constructed in 1960—meaning most homes here have electrical systems designed for a completely different era. Our heating and air conditioning electrician team can evaluate your panel, assess your current and future electrical needs, and recommend the right upgrade path.

Can you install an EV charger at my Lafayette home?

Absolutely—EV charger installation is one of our fastest-growing services in Lafayette, where environmentally-conscious homeowners are increasingly switching to electric vehicles. We install Level 2 chargers (240V) that charge your EV much faster than a standard 120V household outlet—typically adding 25-30 miles of range per hour of charging versus 3-5 miles per hour from a regular outlet. Installation requires a dedicated 240V circuit, typically 40-50 amps, run from your electrical panel to your garage or driveway parking area. In many Lafayette homes with older 100-amp panels, adding EV charging also requires a panel upgrade to handle the additional load safely. Our heating and air conditioning electrician technicians handle the complete job—from initial site assessment and panel evaluation through installation, permitting, and final inspection. We install ChargePoint, Tesla Wall Connectors, JuiceBox, and other popular charging systems.

Why do my lights flicker when the AC turns on?

Flickering lights when your air conditioner starts typically indicates your electrical system is struggling to handle the load. AC compressors draw a significant power surge at startup—sometimes 3-5 times their running amperage—and if your wiring or panel can’t deliver enough current, you’ll see voltage drops that cause visible flickering. This is extremely common in Lafayette homes where the original 1950s or 1960s electrical system wasn’t designed for central air conditioning. While very brief, slight dimming may be normal, persistent or severe flickering suggests a problem that shouldn’t be ignored. Our heating and air conditioning electrician team can diagnose whether you need a dedicated high-amperage circuit for your AC, a panel upgrade to increase overall capacity, or corrections to wiring issues that are limiting power delivery.

Is aluminum wiring in my Lafayette home dangerous?

Aluminum wiring was commonly used in homes built between approximately 1965 and 1973—a period that includes significant construction in Lafayette. While aluminum wiring itself isn’t inherently dangerous, it requires special handling because aluminum expands and contracts more than copper with temperature changes, which can gradually loosen connections over time. Loose connections create electrical resistance, which generates heat, which creates fire risk. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has found that homes with aluminum wiring may be at significantly higher risk of having electrical fire conditions. If your Lafayette home has aluminum wiring, we recommend having it professionally inspected by a licensed heating and air conditioning electrician. Solutions range from installing specially-rated connectors (COPALUM or AlumiConn) at every connection point to complete rewiring with copper, depending on your home’s specific situation, your budget, and your risk tolerance.

Do I need a permit for electrical work in Lafayette?

Yes, most electrical work in the City of Lafayette requires a permit from the Building & Planning Department and subsequent inspection to verify code compliance. This includes electrical panel upgrades, adding new circuits, rewiring, installing additional outlets or switches, EV charger installation, and many other projects beyond simple fixture replacements. Permits exist to protect you—they ensure work meets current California Electrical Code requirements, which have evolved significantly since most Lafayette homes were built. Unpermitted work can create safety hazards, complicate home sales, and void insurance coverage. As a licensed heating and air conditioning electrician contractor, Five or Free Electrical Heating & Air pulls all necessary permits and schedules inspections as part of our service—you don’t have to navigate city bureaucracy yourself.

What’s the difference between a 100-amp and 200-amp electrical panel?

Amperage rating indicates how much total electrical current your panel can safely deliver to your home’s circuits. A 100-amp panel—standard in homes built through the 1970s—provides enough capacity for basic electrical needs of that era: lights, a few outlets per room, and major appliances like a refrigerator, stove, and water heater. However, 100 amps often falls short when you add central air conditioning (which alone may require 30-50 amps), electric vehicle charging (40+ amps), a home office with multiple computers and equipment, modern kitchen appliances, and everything else contemporary life demands. A 200-amp panel provides twice the capacity and is the current standard for new residential construction. For Lafayette homeowners modernizing 1950s-1960s homes or adding significant electrical loads, upgrading from 100 to 200 amps (or higher) is often essential. Our heating and air conditioning electrician team can assess your current usage, estimate future needs, and install the right panel to power your home safely for decades to come.

Still have questions about heating, air conditioning, or electrical services in Lafayette? Call Five or Free Electrical Heating & Air—Lafayette’s trusted heating and air conditioning electrician for over 10 years. We’re always happy to help.

How often should I replace my AC air filter in Lafayette?

With Lafayette’s location in the East Bay hills, you deal with a mix of summer dust, seasonal allergens, oak pollen, and occasional wildfire smoke. We recommend checking your filter monthly and replacing it every 30 to 60 days during heavy-use seasons—especially summer when your AC runs constantly during those 100°F+ heat waves. A clogged filter forces your system to work harder, increases energy bills, and shortens equipment life. During fire season, you may need to change filters even more frequently to maintain indoor air quality. Our heating and air conditioning electrician team can recommend the right filter type—including HEPA or high-MERV options—and set you up on a maintenance schedule that keeps your Lafayette home comfortable and healthy.

Why is my air conditioner running but not cooling my Lafayette home?

Several issues could cause this—low refrigerant from a leak, a dirty condenser coil (common when outdoor units sit under oak trees), a failing compressor, a malfunctioning capacitor, frozen evaporator coils, or ductwork leaks losing cool air in your attic or crawlspace before it reaches your rooms. Lafayette summers put AC systems under extreme strain, especially during heat waves when temperatures exceed 100°F for days at a time. Older systems and undersized units—common in homes where AC was added years after construction—struggle most. Our heating and air conditioning electrician technicians can diagnose the problem quickly and recommend repair or replacement options based on your system’s age, condition, and your home’s specific needs.

How long do HVAC systems typically last in Lafayette’s climate?

Most air conditioners and furnaces last 15 to 20 years with proper maintenance. However, Lafayette’s climate extremes—scorching summer heat waves followed by damp, chilly winters—put significant stress on HVAC equipment. Systems here often cycle more frequently than in milder climates, which accelerates wear. Additionally, many Lafayette homes have systems that were undersized when installed or added as afterthoughts to homes originally built without air conditioning. If your system is over 10-12 years old and needing frequent repairs, it may be more cost-effective to replace it with a newer, high-efficiency model. Our heating and air conditioning electrician team can evaluate your current system, calculate your home’s actual cooling and heating loads, and help you weigh repair versus replacement costs.

What’s the best thermostat for Lafayette’s climate?

We recommend programmable or smart thermostats for Lafayette homeowners. The dramatic temperature swings here—from 100°F+ summer afternoons to 40°F winter nights, plus the difference between sunny hillsides and shaded valleys—mean your system benefits from intelligent scheduling. A programmable thermostat automatically adjusts based on your daily routine, reducing energy waste when you’re away or sleeping. Smart thermostats like Nest, Ecobee, or Honeywell Home learn your habits and optimize further, plus they let you adjust settings remotely when weather changes unexpectedly—perfect for those surprise September heat waves. Our heating and air conditioning electrician team installs, configures, and programs all major thermostat brands to maximize your comfort and efficiency.

Why is my furnace making strange noises?

Different noises indicate different problems. Banging or popping often means ductwork expanding and contracting—very common in Lafayette’s older homes with metal ducts in unconditioned attics and crawlspaces. Squealing typically signals a worn blower belt or failing motor bearing. Rattling may indicate loose components, debris in the system, or ductwork that’s come loose at connections. Grinding usually points to a serious motor issue that needs immediate attention before it causes further damage. Whistling or whooshing can indicate duct leaks or airflow restrictions. Don’t ignore unusual sounds—they typically get worse and more expensive to fix. Call Five or Free Electrical Heating & Air to have a heating and air conditioning electrician inspect your furnace before you’re left without heat on a cold December night.

How do I know if my HVAC ducts need repair or replacement?

Signs your ductwork needs attention include: visible dust or debris blowing from vents when the system runs, significant temperature differences between rooms, musty or stale odors when heating or cooling is on, energy bills that seem higher than they should be, or excessive dust accumulating on furniture throughout your home. Many Lafayette homes built in the 1950s and 1960s have original ductwork that’s now 60+ years old—joints have separated, insulation has deteriorated, and leaks waste enormous amounts of conditioned air. In hillside homes, ductwork often runs through challenging spaces where damage can occur. Our heating and air conditioning electrician team can inspect your ducts using cameras and pressure testing, then recommend sealing, repair, or replacement as needed.

How often should I have my HVAC system serviced in Lafayette?

We recommend professional maintenance twice a year—once in spring before the intense summer heat arrives, and once in fall before you need your heating system for the damp winter months. Lafayette’s climate extremes demand reliable year-round performance. Spring maintenance catches problems before your AC faces its toughest test during July-September heat waves. Fall maintenance ensures your furnace is ready before the first cold, rainy nights of November. Regular service catches small problems before they become expensive emergency repairs, keeps your system running at peak efficiency (saving you money on energy bills), and extends equipment life—important when replacing HVAC systems in Lafayette typically costs $10,000 to $25,000 or more. Five or Free Electrical Heating & Air’s tune-ups include comprehensive inspection, cleaning, testing, and adjustment of all system components.
