My old Juicebox charger gave out (and they are out of business). First, the response was fast! Carlos B (5 stars to him) carefully reviewed the charger setup, electrical panel, subpanel, and also checked some outlets in the house. They recommended a Grizzl-e, which I ordered. Once it arrived, I was able to get an install appointment within a few days. Then Damell K (5 stars to him!!) installed -- and discovered improper original installation and fixed it! Yes! 10 stars!!

SOLAR PROJECT HEROES We are trying to get Sunrun solar but we have to update our electric before Sunrun can proceed. We had Eric and Carlos come to our home today. They were one of 6 electricians that we had come look at our particular complex, 3 panel update. We knew is was a big job, and almost cancelled the appointment because everyone previous to them could not provide a written estimate, or could not properly identify the complete scope of the work. Eric pulled out a phone that had an application that allowed him to plug in all the parts and labor and we had an estimate for the work within 5 minutes. He then informed us that this estimate is their commitment to an accurate assessment, and should anything pop up along the way, they would take responsibility for that cost. The other piece to this project was that PG&E would need to be involved in approval and permitting. He said they handle all communication with PG&E and that the cost for permits was part of the estimate. This sweetened the deal because the estimate also came with zero interest financing. You can imagine the relief. Eric and Carlos were able to verbally paint a picture for us that they could handle the scope of the project from start to finish, with a dollar amount that wasn't going to get pushed, and the option for zero interest financing. We signed the contract on the spot. The contract gives us three days to pull out should our other parties decide they don't want to move forward. Conclusion, if you are trying to get solar before the end of the rebates and updating your system is required, Five or Free is fully prepared to make that project possible.

What Does a Lighting Contractor Do?

A lighting contractor installs, repairs, maintains, and upgrades electrical lighting systems in homes and businesses. Their services include installing recessed lights, chandeliers, ceiling fans, outdoor lighting, under-cabinet lights, and dimmer switches. Licensed lighting contractors ensure all work meets electrical codes, obtain necessary permits, and coordinate with utility companies when needed. They also provide lighting design recommendations to optimize brightness, energy efficiency, and aesthetics. 5 Or Free Electrical Heating and Air offers complete lighting contractor services throughout the SF Bay Area and Sacramento.

How Much Does It Cost to Install Lighting?

Lighting installation costs vary by fixture type: recessed lights cost $125-$300 per fixture (including labor); ceiling fixture installation runs $100-$650; chandelier installation costs $150-$1,000+; and outdoor lighting averages $200-$500 per fixture. For a standard kitchen with 6 recessed lights, expect $700-$1,800. Whole-house lighting projects range from $3,500-$8,000+. California labor rates tend to be 20-30% higher than the national average. Contact 5 Or Free Electrical Heating and Air for a free estimate on your lighting project in the Bay Area or Sacramento.

Can a Handyman Install Ceiling Lights?

In California, a handyman can only perform electrical work valued under $500 (labor and materials combined) and cannot pull permits. Simple tasks like replacing an existing light fixture with a similar one may be within this limit. However, installing new lighting where wiring doesn’t exist, adding circuits, or working on multiple fixtures typically requires a licensed electrical contractor (C-10 license). Unlicensed work can void homeowner’s insurance and create safety hazards. 5 Or Free Electrical Heating and Air is fully licensed and insured for all lighting installations in California.

What Are the 4 Types of Lighting?

The four types of lighting are: 1) Ambient lighting – provides overall room illumination (ceiling fixtures, chandeliers, recessed lights); 2) Task lighting – focused light for specific activities like cooking or reading (under-cabinet lights, desk lamps, pendant lights); 3) Accent lighting – highlights artwork, architecture, or décor (track lights, wall sconces, spotlights); 4) Decorative lighting – fixtures that serve as visual statements (chandeliers, artistic pendants). Professional lighting contractors like 5 Or Free Electrical Heating and Air can install all four types to create a perfectly layered lighting design.

What Is the 3 Lighting Rule?

The 3 lighting rule (also called layered lighting) is a design principle that combines ambient, task, and accent lighting to create a well-balanced, functional space. Ambient lighting provides general illumination, task lighting focuses on work areas, and accent lighting adds depth and highlights features. A key guideline: accent lighting should be three times brighter than ambient lighting to effectively draw attention to focal points. This layered approach creates warmth, depth, and flexibility – allowing you to adjust lighting for different activities and moods. 5 Or Free Electrical Heating and Air can help you implement layered lighting throughout your home.

What Is the Best Type of Lighting for a House?

The best lighting for a house is a combination of LED fixtures using the layered approach (ambient, task, and accent). LEDs are ideal because they use 75-90% less energy than incandescent bulbs, last 25,000+ hours, and come in various color temperatures. For living rooms and bedrooms, use warm light (2700-3000K); for kitchens and bathrooms, use brighter task lighting (3500-4000K). Dimmable fixtures offer maximum flexibility. 5 Or Free Electrical Heating and Air installs energy-efficient LED lighting systems customized for each room in your SF Bay Area or Sacramento home.

What Are the Latest Lighting Trends?

The top lighting trends for 2024-2025 include: 1) Smart lighting systems with app and voice control; 2) Sculptural and statement fixtures that double as art; 3) Natural materials like rattan, bamboo, and handcrafted ceramics; 4) Warm metallic finishes (brushed brass, aged bronze); 5) Tunable/color-changing LEDs for adjustable ambiance; and 6) Oversized pendants as focal points. Layered lighting and biophilic (nature-inspired) designs also continue growing. Ask 5 Or Free Electrical Heating and Air about installing trending fixtures in your home.

What Is the Rule of Thumb for Lighting?

The rule of thumb for lighting is to calculate lumens per square foot based on room use: living rooms and bedrooms need 10-20 lumens/sq ft; kitchens and bathrooms need 70-80 lumens/sq ft; home offices need 50-70 lumens/sq ft. Multiply your room’s square footage by the recommended lumens to determine total light needed. For example, a 150 sq ft kitchen needs approximately 10,500-12,000 lumens total. Another guideline: install one recessed light per 25 square feet. 5 Or Free Electrical Heating and Air can assess your lighting needs and ensure proper illumination throughout your home.
