My old Juicebox charger gave out (and they are out of business). First, the response was fast! Carlos B (5 stars to him) carefully reviewed the charger setup, electrical panel, subpanel, and also checked some outlets in the house. They recommended a Grizzl-e, which I ordered. Once it arrived, I was able to get an install appointment within a few days. Then Damell K (5 stars to him!!) installed -- and discovered improper original installation and fixed it! Yes! 10 stars!!

SOLAR PROJECT HEROES We are trying to get Sunrun solar but we have to update our electric before Sunrun can proceed. We had Eric and Carlos come to our home today. They were one of 6 electricians that we had come look at our particular complex, 3 panel update. We knew is was a big job, and almost cancelled the appointment because everyone previous to them could not provide a written estimate, or could not properly identify the complete scope of the work. Eric pulled out a phone that had an application that allowed him to plug in all the parts and labor and we had an estimate for the work within 5 minutes. He then informed us that this estimate is their commitment to an accurate assessment, and should anything pop up along the way, they would take responsibility for that cost. The other piece to this project was that PG&E would need to be involved in approval and permitting. He said they handle all communication with PG&E and that the cost for permits was part of the estimate. This sweetened the deal because the estimate also came with zero interest financing. You can imagine the relief. Eric and Carlos were able to verbally paint a picture for us that they could handle the scope of the project from start to finish, with a dollar amount that wasn't going to get pushed, and the option for zero interest financing. We signed the contract on the spot. The contract gives us three days to pull out should our other parties decide they don't want to move forward. Conclusion, if you are trying to get solar before the end of the rebates and updating your system is required, Five or Free is fully prepared to make that project possible.

Frequently Asked Questions About Electrician Services in Union City

1. How much does it cost to upgrade an electrical panel in Union City?

Electrical panel upgrades in Union City typically range from $1,500 to $3,500 depending on the amp rating (most homes upgrade to 200-amp service) and whether additional work like rewiring is needed. Many older Union City homes, especially those built in the ’60s through ’80s, have 100-amp or even 60-amp panels that can’t handle modern electrical demands. At Five or Free Electrical Heating & Air, our electricians provide free estimates and can walk you through what your home needs.

2. Why does my circuit breaker keep tripping?

A circuit breaker that keeps tripping is protecting your home from an overload, short circuit, or ground fault. Common causes include too many devices on one circuit, a faulty appliance, or damaged wiring. If it happens repeatedly, don’t just keep resetting it—call an electrician in Union City to diagnose the problem before it becomes a fire hazard.

3. Can I install my own electrical outlet, or do I need an electrician?

While it’s technically possible for a handy homeowner to install an outlet, electrical work in California requires permits and inspections for safety and code compliance. More importantly, incorrect wiring can cause shocks, fires, or damage to your home’s electrical system. Our licensed electricians at Five or Free handle it safely and make sure everything is up to code in Union City.

4. How do I know if my Union City home needs rewiring?

Signs your Union City home needs rewiring include: frequent breaker trips, flickering lights, outlets that don’t work or feel warm, a burning smell near outlets or switches, or outdated wiring that can’t handle modern loads. If your home is over 40 years old and hasn’t been updated, it’s worth having an electrician inspect your wiring. We offer comprehensive electrical inspections to give you peace of mind.

5. What’s the difference between 100-amp and 200-amp electrical service?

A 100-amp panel can handle basic household needs but struggles with modern demands like central AC, electric vehicle chargers, and multiple high-power appliances. A 200-amp panel provides enough capacity for today’s homes and future upgrades. Most electricians in Union City recommend 200-amp service for any panel upgrade or new construction.

6. Do I need a permit for electrical work in Union City?

Yes. Most electrical work in Union City requires a permit from the city, including panel upgrades, new circuits, rewiring, and installing EV chargers. Licensed electricians pull permits as part of the job and ensure inspections are completed. At Five or Free, we handle all permits and inspections so you don’t have to worry about it. Unpermitted electrical work can cause problems when selling your home and may not be covered by insurance if something goes wrong.

7. How long does an electrical panel upgrade take in Union City?

Most electrical panel upgrades in Union City take 4-8 hours to complete, though larger jobs or homes requiring additional work may take a full day or two. Our electricians at Five or Free work efficiently to minimize disruption, and we’ll coordinate with PG&E if a temporary power shutoff is needed during the upgrade.

Frequently Asked Questions About Heating and Air Conditioning Services in Union City

1. How often should I service my air conditioner in Union City?

You should have your AC serviced at least once a year, ideally in spring before the heat arrives. Union City summers regularly hit the 90s and can exceed 100 degrees, putting serious strain on air conditioning systems. Regular maintenance catches small problems before they become expensive breakdowns. Our heating and air conditioning technicians at Five or Free check refrigerant levels, clean coils, test components, and make sure your system is ready for the hot months ahead.

2. Why is my AC running but not cooling my Union City home?

Common causes include low refrigerant (often from a leak), a dirty air filter, frozen evaporator coils, a failing compressor, or blocked airflow from dirty ducts. Our heating and air conditioning team can diagnose the issue and get your AC blowing cold air again quickly.

3. How long do AC units last in Union City?

Most air conditioning systems last 12-15 years with regular maintenance, though Union City’s hot summers can shorten that lifespan if the system works overtime every year. If your AC is over 10 years old and struggling to keep up or needing frequent repairs, it’s worth considering replacement with a more efficient model. We help Union City homeowners evaluate whether repair or replacement makes the most sense.

4. What size AC unit do I need for my Union City home?

AC sizing depends on your home’s square footage, insulation, ceiling height, number of windows, and sun exposure. An oversized unit cycles on and off too frequently and doesn’t dehumidify properly, while an undersized unit runs constantly and can’t keep up with Union City’s heat. Our heating and air conditioning technicians at Five or Free perform proper load calculations to recommend the right size for your home.

5. Why is my furnace blowing cold air?

If your furnace is running but blowing cold air, the most common causes are a faulty pilot light or ignition system, a tripped circuit breaker, a dirty flame sensor, or the thermostat set to “fan” instead of “auto.” Sometimes it’s a simple fix, but our heating and air conditioning team in Union City can diagnose and repair any furnace issue quickly.

6. How much does it cost to replace an HVAC system in Union City?

HVAC system replacement in Union City typically ranges from $5,000 to $12,000+ depending on the system size, efficiency rating (SEER), brand, and installation complexity. Higher efficiency systems cost more upfront but save significantly on energy bills during the long, hot summers. Our heating and air conditioning technicians at Five or Free provide detailed estimates and financing options to fit your budget.

7. Should I repair or replace my old AC unit in Union City?

A good rule of thumb: if the repair cost is more than half the price of a new unit, or if your AC is over 12 years old and needs major repairs, replacement usually makes more sense. Newer systems are 30-50% more efficient than models from 10+ years ago. Our heating and air conditioning experts at Five or Free help you compare options and make the best decision for your budget and home.
