My old Juicebox charger gave out (and they are out of business). First, the response was fast! Carlos B (5 stars to him) carefully reviewed the charger setup, electrical panel, subpanel, and also checked some outlets in the house. They recommended a Grizzl-e, which I ordered. Once it arrived, I was able to get an install appointment within a few days. Then Damell K (5 stars to him!!) installed -- and discovered improper original installation and fixed it! Yes! 10 stars!!

SOLAR PROJECT HEROES We are trying to get Sunrun solar but we have to update our electric before Sunrun can proceed. We had Eric and Carlos come to our home today. They were one of 6 electricians that we had come look at our particular complex, 3 panel update. We knew is was a big job, and almost cancelled the appointment because everyone previous to them could not provide a written estimate, or could not properly identify the complete scope of the work. Eric pulled out a phone that had an application that allowed him to plug in all the parts and labor and we had an estimate for the work within 5 minutes. He then informed us that this estimate is their commitment to an accurate assessment, and should anything pop up along the way, they would take responsibility for that cost. The other piece to this project was that PG&E would need to be involved in approval and permitting. He said they handle all communication with PG&E and that the cost for permits was part of the estimate. This sweetened the deal because the estimate also came with zero interest financing. You can imagine the relief. Eric and Carlos were able to verbally paint a picture for us that they could handle the scope of the project from start to finish, with a dollar amount that wasn't going to get pushed, and the option for zero interest financing. We signed the contract on the spot. The contract gives us three days to pull out should our other parties decide they don't want to move forward. Conclusion, if you are trying to get solar before the end of the rebates and updating your system is required, Five or Free is fully prepared to make that project possible.

We had Five or Free electricians replacing an old subpanel and running some new circuits for our kitchen remodel. Everything is now up to current code 🙂 - an unexpected expense that we're glad we took care of quickly. The service technicians (Evan and Matt) showed up on time and spent a long day completing all the work professionally. They cleaned up every work area and patched the walls nicely. We'll be calling back for our next remodeling project I'm sure.

Chris and Rafael did a great job rewiring and installing a new panel in a new location in my home. They dealt efficiently and effectively with the inevitable surprises that come up in a big job in an older home. They were respectful, thoughtful and flexible in accommodating my schedule. Chris and Rafael were conscientious in making sure that they protected my home while doing the work and cleaning up after the job so that not a trace was left. Thanks guys!

I am soo happy we chose Five or Free for our electrical. Firstly, every single person who was involved in the process was amazing, friendly and reliable from the quote to project completion. Second, the process was transparent and the work was completed on time. Third, I 100% trust the work the team did- it's superb and they took wonderful care of the house and our belongings as the work was happening. Lastly and most importantly Evan and Matthew are the absolute best. They went above and beyond expectations and provided amazing recommendations that have seriously made our home 100x better. Five or Free Electrical Heating & Air has been serving El Sobrante and the surrounding Contra Costa County communities for over a decade. We’re your certified heating and air conditioning and electrician experts, and we’ve built our reputation on reliable service and honest work.

How do I know if my El Sobrante home needs rewiring?

Signs your home may need rewiring include: frequently tripping breakers, burning smells near outlets or switches, discolored or warm outlet covers, buzzing sounds from the electrical panel, two-prong outlets throughout the house (indicating no grounding), or aluminum wiring (common in homes built between 1965-1973). Many El Sobrante homes built during the post-war boom have outdated wiring that wasn’t designed for today’s electrical demands. Our heating and air conditioning electrician team can perform a full electrical inspection and let you know if rewiring is necessary for safety and performance.

Can you install an EV charger at my El Sobrante home?

Yes. Electric vehicle charger installation is one of our most requested services. We install Level 2 chargers (240V) that charge your EV much faster than a standard outlet. The installation typically requires a dedicated circuit from your electrical panel—and in many El Sobrante homes with older 100-amp panels, this may also require a panel upgrade. Our heating and air conditioning electrician technicians handle the complete job, from panel evaluation to charger installation to final inspection.

Why do my lights flicker when the AC turns on?

Flickering lights when your air conditioner starts usually indicates your electrical system is struggling to handle the load. AC compressors draw significant power at startup, and if your wiring or panel can’t deliver enough current, you’ll see voltage drops that cause flickering. This is common in older El Sobrante homes where the original electrical system wasn’t designed for central air conditioning. Our heating and air conditioning electrician team can diagnose whether you need a dedicated circuit for your AC, a panel upgrade, or other electrical improvements.

What’s the difference between a 100-amp and 200-amp electrical panel?

Amperage refers to how much electrical current your panel can safely deliver to your home. A 100-amp panel was standard in older homes and can handle basic electrical needs, but it often falls short when you add central AC, electric vehicle charging, a home office, or modern appliances. A 200-amp panel provides twice the capacity and is the current standard for residential construction. Most El Sobrante homes built before the 1980s have 100-amp service. If you’re upgrading your HVAC system or adding electrical loads, our heating and air conditioning electrician team can upgrade your panel to 200 amps or higher.

Are electrical panel upgrades required for new AC installations?

Not always, but often. Modern air conditioning systems require dedicated circuits with specific amperage requirements. If your El Sobrante home has an older panel that’s already near capacity, adding a new AC unit may push it over the limit. During every AC installation estimate, our heating and air conditioning electrician technicians evaluate your electrical panel to determine if an upgrade is needed—and if so, we handle both the electrical and HVAC work in a coordinated installation.

How can I tell if an electrical outlet is unsafe?

Warning signs of unsafe outlets include: outlets that feel warm or hot to the touch, discoloration or scorch marks around the outlet, sparks when plugging in devices, a burning smell, loose-fitting plugs that fall out easily, or outlets that don’t work consistently. Two-prong outlets (no ground) are also considered outdated and potentially unsafe for modern electronics and appliances. If you notice any of these issues in your El Sobrante home, call our heating and air conditioning electrician team for an inspection before a small problem becomes a fire hazard.

Do I need a permit for electrical work in El Sobrante?

Yes, most electrical work in unincorporated Contra Costa County—including El Sobrante—requires a permit and inspection. This includes panel upgrades, new circuit installations, rewiring, and adding outlets or switches. As a licensed heating and air conditioning electrician contractor, we pull all necessary permits and schedule inspections as part of our service. This protects you and ensures the work meets current electrical codes.

Can you add more outlets to my El Sobrante home?

Absolutely. Many older El Sobrante homes were built with far fewer outlets than modern living requires. We install additional outlets, including standard 120V outlets, 240V outlets for appliances, GFCI outlets for kitchens and bathrooms, USB outlets for convenience, and outdoor outlets for landscape equipment. Our heating and air conditioning electrician team ensures new outlets are properly wired to your panel with appropriate circuit protection.

What causes circuit breakers to trip repeatedly?

Circuit breakers trip when they detect an overload (too much current), a short circuit (hot wire touching neutral), or a ground fault (current escaping to ground). Repeated tripping in El Sobrante homes often indicates circuits that are overloaded because they’re running more devices than they were designed for—especially common when older homes add air conditioning or other high-draw appliances. Our heating and air conditioning electrician technicians can diagnose the cause and recommend solutions, whether that’s redistributing loads, adding dedicated circuits, or upgrading your panel.

Do you install whole-house surge protectors?

Yes. A whole-house surge protector installs at your electrical panel and protects all your home’s electronics, appliances, and HVAC equipment from power surges—whether from lightning, utility switching, or other sources. This is especially important for protecting expensive HVAC equipment, smart thermostats, and home electronics. Our heating and air conditioning electrician team installs surge protection as a standalone service or as part of panel upgrades and HVAC installations.

Why should I choose a combined heating and air conditioning electrician instead of separate contractors?

Hiring a heating and air conditioning electrician who handles both trades saves you time, money, and coordination headaches. HVAC systems and electrical systems are deeply connected—your air conditioner needs properly sized circuits, your furnace requires correct wiring, and your thermostat ties everything together. When one company handles it all, you get faster diagnostics, seamless installations, and a single point of accountability. In El Sobrante, where many homes have older electrical systems that weren’t designed for modern HVAC demands, this combined expertise is especially valuable.

How do I know if my El Sobrante home needs an electrical panel upgrade?

Several signs indicate your electrical panel may need upgrading: circuit breakers trip frequently (especially when running the AC), lights flicker when appliances turn on, you’re using multiple power strips and extension cords, your panel still uses fuses instead of breakers, or your panel is rated below 200 amps. Many El Sobrante homes built before the 1980s have 100-amp panels that simply can’t handle modern electrical loads plus HVAC equipment. Our heating and air conditioning electrician team can evaluate your panel and recommend upgrades if needed.

What size air conditioner do I need for my El Sobrante home?

AC sizing depends on several factors: square footage, ceiling height, insulation quality, window placement, and how much sun exposure your home gets. El Sobrante’s varied terrain means homes in the hills may have different cooling needs than those in the valley. A unit that’s too small won’t keep up on hot days; one that’s too large will short-cycle and create humidity problems. Our heating and air conditioning electrician technicians perform load calculations to determine the right size for your specific home.

How often should I have my HVAC system serviced in El Sobrante?

We recommend professional maintenance twice a year—once for your air conditioning in spring (before the warm season) and once for your heating system in fall (before the cold months). El Sobrante’s climate, with its dry, dusty summers and damp winters, can be hard on HVAC equipment. Regular maintenance catches small problems before they become expensive repairs and keeps your system running efficiently.

Do you offer emergency heating and air conditioning electrician services in El Sobrante?

Yes. HVAC emergencies don’t wait for business hours, and neither do we. Whether your AC fails during an August heat wave or your furnace stops working on a cold, rainy night, our heating and air conditioning electrician team is available for emergency repairs throughout El Sobrante.

What brands of HVAC equipment do you install and service?

We work with all major brands, including Carrier, Lennox, Trane, Rheem, Goodman, Bryant, American Standard, Amana, Daikin, Mitsubishi, and more. Whether you need a repair on your existing system or want recommendations for a new installation, our heating and air conditioning electrician team has the expertise to help.

Can you help me improve the air quality in my El Sobrante home?

Absolutely. Indoor air quality is a concern for many homeowners, especially during wildfire season when outdoor air quality suffers. We install air filtration systems, UV purifiers, and whole-home ventilation solutions. We also service and replace air filters and can recommend humidity control options to address El Sobrante’s damp winter conditions.

What are signs my furnace needs to be replaced?

Consider furnace replacement if your system is over 15-20 years old, requires frequent repairs, heats unevenly throughout your home, makes unusual noises, or if your energy bills have increased significantly. Yellow or flickering pilot lights can also indicate combustion problems. Our heating and air conditioning electrician team can inspect your furnace and give you an honest assessment of repair versus replacement.
